The Artist
THE DIGITAL AGE OF KUSAMA
Yayoi Kusama, the artist, does everything from painted art work to unique styles of performance art. I chose to look deeper into how Kusama is taking advantage of the new art world in which there are no "borders."
Kusama has always been an artist to portray how she is feeling into her own work. As an artist who suffers from severe mental illness, Kusama has used her art as a way to help keep herself grounded. More specifically by reviewing her press, as it allows for her to push aside the terrifying hallucinations she has and shows her one thing she isn't afraid of, the limelight. The digital age of art has allowed for Kusama to spread her work, as well as view the response to her work much easier, which in turn is most likely helping her mental health in someways.
Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, many people have been opening up about the struggles they face with mental health. In this statement, Kusama has opened up about how she has felt the pandemic is shaping all of us.
I feel that Kusama has fully embraced the digital age of art, and has used the all of the perks that come with it to ensure that her art is shared with everyone around the world. In this way, Kusama is the perfect digital age artist.
WHY KUSAMA?
INSPIRATION ART
I chose to recreate Kusama's work for many reasons. One of the major reasons was that I like her use of bright colors. Many, if not all, of Kusama's works feature bright, neon colors. I am someone who likes bright things. Another reason I chose to recreate Kusama's work is because I found her style of art and use of spots to make creatures like the butterflies pictured to the side and the pumpkins pictured above. Finally I chose Kusama because all in all I just found her art the most appealing, and wanted to try and create something similar to it.
In my recreation of "Butterfly" by Kusama, I incoorporated many of her ideas into the one piece of art. I utilized bright colors and created a butterfly drawing on my iPad with an app called Color. All in all, Kusama has used the digital art world to help her, so I found it fitting to do my inspiration piece digitally.
